A few years ago I was invited to participate at “Bangkok Rum Cocktail Week.” Whilst preparing for the masterclass and cocktail menu, I learned that the 16th of August is National Rum Day. Let’s celebrate and look at a brief history of rum.
It is well known, that whilst the Spanish, Dutch, French, and English were conquering the “New World” they brought several crops with them as well as knowledge of distillation. Christopher Columbus introduced sugarcane to the Caribbean which resulted in sugar production over the centuries. This has become a backbone for rum production.
Ever since then you can find various spellings of Rum, Ron, Rhum, which helps to distinguish the rum style and origin: Rum established through English & Dutch colonies, Ron - Spanish and Portuguese colonies, Rhum - French colonies; each one of them is totally different and unique.
The complexity of rum varies highly. It can be sipped on its own or mixed into cocktails such as Daiquiri, Mai Tai, Mojito, Zombie, Pina Colada, Hemingway Daiquiri, Dark & Stormy, Cuba Libre, and Planters Punch to name a few.
We chose to celebrate with Pamplemouse - a simple twist on a Daiquiri with fresh Pomelo fruit.
What would you celebrate with?
